DAILY DISPOSABLE CONTACT LENSES

Dr. Riegel primarily prescribes daily disposable contact lenses. This is because daily disposable contacts are the healthiest option on the market today. Replacing contacts on a daily basis greatly decreases the risk of infections and other complications which are observed more frequently with 2-week and monthly disposable lenses. Since daily disposable contact lenses integrate the newest lens material and technology, they are typically more comfortable and provide superior vision. Increased oxygen permeability, improved lens wettability, and thinner lens material contribute to better comfort for all day wear. This is especially beneficial for our dry eye patients and those suffering from allergies.

CONTACT LENSES FOR ASTIGMATISM

Patients with astigmatism require special contact lenses called "Toric Contact Lenses", or "Contact Lenses for Astigmatism". Only this type of contact lens will allow a patient with astigmatism to obtain the clearest vision possible in contacts. Technology has improved over the years which means there are more astigmatic contact lens options than ever before, even for patients with high prescriptions. Options include disposable contact lenses, custom-designed lenses, and hybrid contact lenses. Dr. Riegel encourages patients with astigmatism to schedule a consultation for contact lenses, even if you have previously been told you are not a candidate for contacts.

MULTIFOCAL/BIFOCAL CONTACT LENSES

Beginning around the age of 40, patients require a reading prescription to help see clearly up close. This new reliance on glasses for clear vision can be a source of frustration for many patients. Luckily, there are new options for soft and hard contact lens wearers called "Multifocal Contact Lenses", sometimes referred to as "Bifocal Contact Lenses". These lenses provide clear vision at a range of distances, allowing patients more freedom from reading glasses.

COLORED CONTACT LENSES

Colored contact lenses are a safe and fun way to accentuate your natural eye color or to change your eye color altogether. This type of contact lens comes in a variety of options: monthly disposable and daily disposable.  Colored contact lenses should be prescribed by your eye doctor, even if they are being worn without a prescription. If you're interested in color contacts, be sure to discuss this with Dr. Riegel at your next visit.

RIGID GAS PERMEABLE CONTACT LENSES

Unlike soft contact lenses which can easily mold to the shape of the eye, rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses maintain their shape on the eye. Therefore, these lenses must be designed specifically to fit each unique corneal shape. RGP lenses are often used today to fit patients with corneal disorders such as Keratoconus. However, some patients with regular corneas prefer using RGPs because they perceive crisper visual acuity than with soft lenses, especially when the patient has a high prescription. In addition to the exceptional vision you'll receive from RGPs, there are also major health benefits. These contact lenses promote good oxygen flow to the cornea and allow the tear film to act in a more natural state, flushing away waste products and decreasing dry eye symptoms. Dr. Riegel looks forward to discussing the newest and best RGP contact lens options for your individual case.

SCLERAL CONTACT LENSES

Scleral contact lenses have become increasingly popular over recent years. These lenses are made of a hard, gas permeable material but are larger in size than RGPs. Scleral contact lenses are best for patients who have advanced corneal disorders such as Keratoconus, or for patients who seek better comfort or vision than can be obtained from other lenses. Additionally, patients who suffer from severe dry eyes may find great relief from a scleral contact lens. This is because the cornea is constantly bathed in saline while wearing the lens. The large size of the lens protects the cornea from external irritants and prevents tear evaporation.

HYBRID CONTACT LENSES

Hybrid contact lenses are a great option for patients who require the specialty fit and vision of an RGP but with the comfort of a soft contact lens. The center of a hybrid contact lens is made of a hard, oxygen permeable material, providing superior visual acuity for patients with corneal disorders or high astigmatism prescriptions. The outer edge of the hybrid contact lens is made of a soft material, providing exceptional comfort and stability throughout the day.
